New Companies House Rules: Transition to Digital and Changes to accounts

Talk to an expert

From 1 April 2027, all accounts filings (including Dormantaccounts) to Companies House must be filed using commercial software. This ispart of a broader digital transformation aimed at making UK company filingsmore secure, efficient, and transparent. So, what’s changing—and how could it affect you?

No More Paper or Web-Based Accounts Filing

As of 2027, Companies House will close its routes for paper and direct web-based submissions for accounts.

This change applies to all entities registered with Companies House, and in particular will affect those who:

  • currently file their own accounts via web-filing or by paper
  • file through third-party agents or accountants who do not use commercial software

Instead, accounts must be submitted through recognised commercial software that meets the new standards.

Changes to company filing options

One of the most significant changes coming in 2027 is that all limited companies will be required to file a copy of their profit and loss account to Companies House. This includes small and micro-entity companies, who were previously able to withhold this level of detail.

As of 1 April 2027, abridged accounts will also no longer be accepted.

There has been speculation that the government may reconsider these requirements but if this change does take effect as legislated, your company’s turnover, expenses, and profitability will become part of the public record — accessible to lenders, suppliers, clients, competitors, and the general public.

More Than Just a Tool: Accounting Software is an Opportunity

There is an app for everything! A well-used cliché but also a truth, and never more when it comes to accounting software. There are providers a-plenty: Xero, Sage, QuickBooks, Freeagent and ClearBooks. Even banks are getting on board, providing dedicated tools to analyse bank transactions for business purposes. In fact, HMRC’s Making Tax Digital compliance software list has over 400 software apps available from a large number of suppliers.
